![]() ![]() Obviously I'd be hard pressed to give a nod to one over another, but it really depends on the style and way you play as to which is best for you. Most of my guitars are custom-built hybrids with a combination of Fender and Gibson design. I use push-pull pots for coil tap and phase. Noise Gate Pedals The Noise Gate pedals are a great device that can be used to avoid hum on single coil pickups. I like a Gibson 3-way pickup selector over a Fender 5-way. The reason that single coil pickups are used is to achieve a different sound compared to a traditional humbucker, as well as using it will make the signal more audible. I always use a bridge position humbucker (Gibson), but prefer a single coil neck pickup (Fender). I like a hard tail bridge with strings run through the body (Fender). Ebony fingerboard on a maple neck is my current go-to choice. A 25.5" (Fender) scale length is also better for my larger hands and helps with the lower tuning. My favorite neck is a one piece maple (Fender), but a tilt-back head stock (Gibson) helps with string tension in my dropped C-tuned instruments. I like the "twanginess" of a bolt-on neck (Fender) more than a glued-in set neck (Gibson). With Country, Blues or Funk I love Swamp Ash bodies (typically Fender). ![]() When you split the humbucker, you simply turn one coil off, leaving the pickup a bit quieter than a regular single coil pickup. To stop the pickup being absurdly loud, the two coils individually are often wound less hot than a regular single coil. ![]() Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Infinity SD10 (4+5) Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator.I've owned many of both and I came to realize that there are some attributes of each I prefer and others I don't.įor Hard and Classic rock I prefer a Mahogany body (typically a Gibson feature). Windings - a humbucker is usually wired with both coils in series. Humbuckers are preferred by Jazz, Hard Rock, and Heavy Metal guitarists, whereas Single Coils are preferred by surf and country guitarists. Likewise, when I saw Paul F last year, he had 705's on his Franklin guitar, and it sounded sweet. Main Differences Between Humbucker vs Single Coil Humbuckers have two coils which result in a thicker, deeper, and smoother sound, whereas Single Coils are brighter and crisper. I have a pair of NOS older type 705's that will go into my push pull when I get time to install them. Bobbe has told me repeatedly over the years that they have the clarity and noise repelling qualities that he needs for recording. ![]() The last time I saw Bobbe Seymour's Push Pull Emmons it had Lawrence 510 pickups on it.Įvery time I have seen Bobbe's personal black push pull, it has had the same Lawrence 705 chrome surround pick-ups mounted. The Lawrence pickups are humbuckers but there is no loss of tone.Ĭonsider the highly regarded pedal steel player Paul Franklin uses Lawrence pickups on his guitars. ![]()
